Born Lungile Rowen Nyawose on the 25th May in Bomela Clinic in Port Shepstone in the South Coast of KZN. Lungile meaning ‘it is well’, with her soul, a songstress with an angelic voice and talent was born that day.


Lungile was discovered by the renowned businessman Mr. Mdu Ngcobo, well known in the entertainment and music business during her audition performance at Ugu Jazz festival 2010 in Port Shepstone. Touch Africa records signed Lungile Nyawose under their record label and gave her the stage name ‘Naima Kay’, which is an Arabic name defining ‘Peace and Tranquility’.​


Naima Kay’s vocal talent started in her high school days, when she joined the IngwembalaHigh School choir in 2005, her love for music grew on her. Naima Kay’s love for music quickly moved to writing her on lyrics, developing and nurturing that talent for years thereafter.


She recalls that Busi Mhlongo, Miriam Makeba and Dorothy Masuka had a great impact or rather influence in her choice of music and writing. In 2013, Naima Kay was introduced on the phenomenal stage of the Durban Jazz Festival performing alongside Mam Dorothy Masukafulfilling one of her longest dreams.


Naima Kay’s debut album titled ‘Umsebenzi’ had the heavyweight of the music industry, more importantly, Kings of producing for `Afro-soul genre music personal touch. On this album, she worked with the award-winning producers Robbie Malingaand Mjakes‘Mojalefa’ Thebe.


This album reached Gold Status and the debut single titled ‘Lelilanga’ earned her the Best Female award at the Metro FM Awards and Best Newcomer of the year at the South African Music Awards. One of her highlights in the music career was being awarded the opportunity to perform at the SAMA awards in 2014 alongside the Gangs of Ballet. This is the very same year she released her anticipated 2ndalbum titled ‘Ngiyavuma’, this very same album also earned her nominations on KORA awards as well as SATMA awards.


‘Ngiyavuma’ album was produced by the duo once again Robbie Malingaand Mjakes‘Mojalefa’ Thebe, this album was well-received, this meant that Naima kay was now a force to be reckoned with. In 2016, Naima Kay released her 3rdalbum titled ‘All About Love’ a much more intimate album, the single ‘Thando’ earned exceptional airplay across radio stations nationwide. In this album, she broadens her production by working with MondliNgcobo, Joe Nina, SphiweJulaand Wonder Khela. ‘All about love’ was recorded in studio with a LIVE band.


Naima Kay has serenaded crowds at the biggest festivals in South Africa, namely Cape Town International Jazz Festival, MacufeFestival, UguJazz Festival, MatatieleFestival and Durban Jazz Festival during the golden hour accompanied by an 8 orchestra just to mention a few.



In 2019, she has been working timeously on her 4thalbum titled ‘Queening’ with MondliNgcoboas the main producer of the album. The singles ‘Soka lami’ produced by Sphiwe Jula and Naima Kay and ‘Sondela baby’ produced by Mondli Ngcobo and Naima Kay were all released, and both received great reviews as well as earning their spots on the music charts across radio stations in South Africa.
